INEC Begins Distribution of Sensitive Materials for Osun Governorship Election
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has commenced the distribution of sensitive electoral materials to the 30 local government areas of Osun State ahead of Saturday’s governorship election.
The materials were distributed from the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) facility in Osogbo, the state capital, under the supervision of the Osun Resident Electoral Commissioner, Oluwatoyin Babalola.
The distribution was initially delayed following the late arrival of newly printed ballot papers and result sheets from Abuja.
INEC explained that the delay was caused by the need to reproduce the election materials after the Social Democratic Party (SDP) and its candidate, Francis Ajala, were added to the ballot following a Federal High Court judgment.
The development increased the number of political parties participating in the election from 14 to 15, forcing the commission to reproduce the ballot papers and result sheets to reflect the SDP candidates.
INEC National Commissioner in charge of the Osun election, Kunle Ajayi, said the commission commenced the distribution as soon as the materials arrived to ensure they reached their designated locations ahead of Saturday’s poll.
As of Thursday night, buses conveying the sensitive materials had begun leaving the CBN premises in Osogbo for their assigned local government areas.
The Osun governorship election is scheduled to hold on Saturday, August 15, with voters expected to elect the next governor of the state.
