Kwara enters second wave of COVID-19

By Emmanuel Awosika

Authorities in Kwara say the state is set to witness a second wave of COVID-19 infections, after the number of positive cases jumped in November.

The Chairman of the Kwara State Medical Advisory Sub-committee on COVID-19, Dr. Femi Oladiji, said several factors, including lack of adherence to prevention guidelines, caused rise in COVID-19 cases in the state.

He, however, mentioned that the increase in voluntary testing had contributed to the higher number of positive cases.

Other reasons adduced by Oladiji for the Kwara’s second wave of COVID-19 include: “the influx of people from other states in Nigeria and from overseas and expansion of sampling and testing capacities by the State which was assisted by the Federal Government of Nigeria under the Regional Disease Surveillance System Enhancement (REDISSE) and National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC).”

Oladiji revealed that the members of the Sub-committee on COVID-19 found 180 new cases of COVID-19 in the state between 11 November 2020 and 11 December 2020, marking a three-fold increase on the number recorded the previous month.

“December 11 alone, the state reported 23 confirmed cases. Residents of the state are therefore urged to adhere to preventive measures at all times to limit the spread of the disease,” he said in the statement.
