Lagos begins crackdown on cash payments for regulated transport fares

The Lagos State Government has commenced enforcement against cash fare payments on regulated public transport services, warning that commuters and operators who violate the directive risk sanctions.

The government said the move is aimed at ensuring full compliance with its cashless transport policy, which requires passengers to pay fares through approved electronic payment platforms.

According to the authorities, enforcement officers have been deployed to monitor compliance across designated transport corridors, while defaulters will face penalties in line with existing regulations.

The government urged commuters to obtain and use the approved payment cards or digital platforms when using regulated buses and other participating transport services.

It added that the policy is intended to improve transparency, enhance accountability in fare collection and promote a more efficient public transportation system across the state.
