Lagos Gas explosion: Plant not licensed to operate — DPR

By Emmanuel Awosika

The Department of Petroleum Resources on Sunday said that Best Roof Gas Station, the scene of last Thursday’s explosion in Lagos, lacked an operational license.

Director of the DPR, Sarki Awalu, disclosed this in a statement released on Sunday in which he also commiserated with victims of the explosion.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), five persons lost their lives in the explosion which occured while a gas tanker was dispensing in the densely populated area. Another eight persons suffered various degree of injuries in the incident.

Awalu said that preliminary investigations into the incident revealed that the gas station had no operational license.

He assured the public of the DPR’s commitment to updating the public as it uncovered more details in its investigations.

The DPR boss said the agency had guidelines for the operation of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) refilling plants and auto gas refuelling stations as well as storage and utilisation.

He stated that the guidelines comprised requirements for the establishment and operation of gas facilities.

Among these requirements include fire water storage and sprinklers, perimeter fence with firewall, and so on.

These, he said, would ensure such facilities meet the baseline standards for Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) regulations.
