Lagos State Government has announced a significant improvement in the mathematics performance of students in its public schools, attributing the progress to sustained investment in education, strategic partnerships and the recognition of academic excellence.

The state’s Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Jamiu Ali-Balogun, disclosed this during the Darsel State Award Mathematics Competition held at Adeyemi Bero Auditorium, Alausa, Ikeja.

Represented by the Permanent Secretary in the ministry, Mrs. Abisola Dokunmu-Adegbite, the commissioner said a comparison of students’ performance in mathematics between 2024 and 2025 showed a marked improvement, describing the development as evidence that government interventions in the education sector are yielding positive results.

“Rewarding academic excellence is already paying off, with a clear difference in students’ mathematics performance. When you reward hard work and success, the results can only get better. Comparing our results from 2024 to 2025, there is a clear improvement and I can assure you that mathematics education in Lagos will continue to improve,” he said.

Ali-Balogun reaffirmed the state’s commitment to expanding access to quality education and collaborating with credible stakeholders to enhance teaching and learning outcomes.

According to him, the government carefully evaluates every partnership proposal to ensure it aligns with the state’s educational priorities and delivers measurable benefits to students.

“Our doors remain open for genuine collaboration in education. We assess every proposal on its merit, the needs of our students and the impact it will make. To our students, I urge you not to give up, and to our teachers, I say thank you for your dedication. Please do not relent,” he added.

The commissioner also highlighted the impact of the Darsel Mathematics App, describing it as an innovative technology-driven platform designed to bridge learning gaps and stimulate students’ interest in mathematics across the six educational districts of the state.

He noted that the initiative complements the government’s efforts to improve teaching and learning, particularly in science and mathematics education.

Students in the Junior Secondary School (JSS3) category were honoured for their outstanding performance and consistent use of the Darsel App, which simplifies the learning of mathematics through interactive digital engagement.

Chief Executive Officer of Sapphire Exploit 21st Century Skills, Dr. Tolu Alalade, said the platform has transformed mathematics learning in Lagos schools, revealing that students correctly solved about 8.7 million mathematics questions during the current academic session.

Describing the achievement as a game changer, Alalade said mathematics equips students with critical thinking and problem-solving skills that extend beyond classroom calculations.

At the competition, Ajumoni Junior Grammar School, Okota, from Lagos Education District VI, emerged overall winner among the 285 participating schools.

Ojodu Junior Grammar School, also from District VI, secured second place, while Dr. Lucas Memorial Junior High School from Education District V finished third.
