Lagos seeks to eliminate bureaucracy to enhance healthcare delivery

By Emmanuel Awosika

The Lagos State Government has said there is a need to eliminate bureaucracy in the healthcare sector to encourage better and faster delivery.

The State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu stated this at the Y2020 Health Forum, themed: “Reform of Bureaucratic Process: Creativity and Innovation in the Health Care System”, which held on Friday in Lekki, Lagos.

Sanwo-Olu remarked that government must develop innovative strategies to improve healthcare delivery in the country.

Sanwo-Olu, who was represented by Deputy Governor Dr. Kadri Obafemi Hamzat, maintained that it was ill-advised to run a healthcare service bedeviled by bureaucracy and red-tapism.

According to him, this would lead to several problems, including complications in diseases, avoidable deaths, and worsening of sicknesses.

The Governor asserted that his government remained committed to fulfilling its promise to enhance healthcare service delivery in the state, adding that it was part of his T.H.E.M.E.S. agenda.

“We understand the importance of an efficient healthcare system. This is why we have included health as one of our topmost priorities on the T.HE.M.E.S development agenda at the inception of our administration”.

“The goal of the health pillar of the T.H.E.M.E.S agenda is to ensure the provision of efficient and effective healthcare delivery to Lagosians and to make healthcare more seamless for the good people of Lagos,” he added.

Sanwo-Olu said the government’s commitment to quality healthcare informed its decision to support policies such as the Lagos Health Insurance scheme and EKOTELEMED.
