LASU Protest: Workers lock out VC and students

By Emmanuel Awosika

Protesting workers at the Lagos State University, Ojo, have refused to allow anyone enter the campus as the university resumes lectures the six-month coronavirus break.

The protesting workers are members of the four staff unions in the university namely, the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU), Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and the National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT).

The workers, who were gathered at the gate by 7am, refused university staff, including the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Olanrewaju Fagboun and returning students entrance to the the campus.

Per reports, the workers are protesting against the Lagos State Government’s failure to honour its promise to pay them salary increases.

They accused the Lagos State Government of paying the salary increment to other workers while excluding those in tertiary institutions.

The Vice Chancellor, Prof. Olanrewaju Fagboun, had reportedly tried to persuade the protesting workers to allow entry to the university, all to no avail.

Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, had earlier ordered that tertiary institutions in the state be reopened on September 1 (today) to allow final-year students resume lectures.
