Major-General Adeniyi convicted and demoted over leaked video

The former Theatre Commander of Operation Lafiya Dole, Maj. Gen. Olusegun Adeniyi has been convicted by a court martial for violating military social media guidelines.

He was found guilty on Monday and an order was given for his demotion by at least three years.

This came eight months after a leaked video of Adeniyi complaining about a lack of military equipment to combat Boko Haram insurgents in the North-East surfaced online.

The video also showed him lamenting about insurgents outgunning troops. He pointed out that intelligence failure was responsible for an attack by insurgents that claimed dozens of soldiers.

This revelations led to his removal from the insurgency war and suspension by military authorities.
Adeniyi’s aide, Private Tokunbo Obanla, who was prosecuted alongside the general, was also found guilty and sentenced to 28 days in jail with hard labour.

Both convictions are subject to confirmation by the military authorities.

Adeniyi had denied leaking the video, stating that Obanla was in custody of his phone at the time of the incident.

However, Obanla in his statement, had allegedly admitted to posting the video on social media in error.

Adeniyi’s lawyer had however said he would appeal the judgement.
