Messi breaks Ronaldo record after scoring for Inter Miami

Inter Miami captain Lionel Messi has surpassed a record previously held by Cristiano Ronaldo after scoring in his side’s Major League Soccer match against San Diego FC.

Messi scored from a free-kick in Inter Miami’s 3-1 defeat to San Diego on Sunday, taking his career tally to 930 goals in official matches, according to reports.

The goal also saw Messi reach the 930-goal mark in fewer matches than Ronaldo, who is also pursuing the 1,000-goal milestone in official football.

Messi’s goal came in the 24th minute after San Diego had taken the lead through Anders Dreyer.

The Argentine forward curled the free-kick over the wall and into the net to bring Inter Miami level.

The latest milestone adds to Messi’s scoring record since joining Inter Miami in 2023.

Earlier in 2026, Messi also became the first player to score 100 goals for Inter Miami, reaching the mark in 115 appearances across all competitions.

Messi has continued to compete with Ronaldo for several major career scoring records, with both players now closing in on the 1,000-goal mark in official matches.
