Navy Seizes 1.9 Tonnes of Cannabis, Rescues 25 Stowaways in Lagos
The Nigerian Navy has seized 1.9 tonnes of suspected cannabis and rescued 25 stowaways during operations in Lagos.
The operations form part of efforts by the Navy to combat drug trafficking, illegal migration and other criminal activities within the state’s maritime domain.
The Navy has been working with other security agencies, including the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) and the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), to tackle illicit activities along Lagos waterways and at maritime facilities.
Stowaways are people who secretly board ships or conceal themselves in cargo without the knowledge or permission of the vessel’s owners or crew. The practice poses safety risks and can expose those involved to dangerous conditions during voyages.
The Navy has also intensified intelligence-led operations aimed at intercepting illicit substances and preventing criminal elements from exploiting Nigeria’s waterways.
The seized cannabis is expected to be subject to further investigation, while the rescued stowaways may be handed over to the relevant authorities for screening and further action.
