The number of COVID-19 cases recorded in Nigeria jumped to 61,558 after the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control confirmed 118 new cases on Monday.

The NCDC made the figures public via its Twitter account, explaining that the new infections were recorded in nine states of the federation.

Lagos has the highest number with 55 cases while Rivers followed with 26 cases. Imo and Osun states rounded up the top four with 12 and 8 cases respectively.

Other states that recorded fresh COVID-19 infections include Plateau (6), FCT (5), Kaduna (4), Ogun (3), Edo (2) and Niger (1).

The NCDC also announced the discharge of 86 patients from various COVID-19 isolation centres across the country.

It advised Nigerians that the pandemic was not over and they should always wear masks to curb the spread of the virus.

“A properly worn facemask prevents droplets from landing on surfaces when you cough or sneeze,” NCDC said.
