Major-General Johnson Olu Irefin, a General Officer Commanding with the Nigerian Army, Bori Camp, has died from coronavirus-related complications.

Before his death in Abuja from COVID-19, the late Irefin replaced Maj.-Gen. Felix Agugo in July 2020 as the division’s commander.

While the Army is yet to release a statement on the late Irefin’s death, an anymous senior military officer confirmed to the PUNCH that the GOC had died on Thursday due to complications arising from COVID-19.

“One of our fine officers is dead. He is the GOC, 6th Division. He died in Abuja after developing complications caused by the coronavirus,” the source stated.

The Army has, however, cancelled the Chief of Army Staff Annual Conference holding in Abuja in the wake of Irefin’s demise.

Prior to becoming Commander of the 6 Division, Irefin had also served as GOC for the 81 Division of the Nigerian Army in Lagos.
