NIMASA warns of impending ban action

By Modupe Shodeinde

The Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) has called for the registration of foreign vessels operating on the Nigerian waters to avoid ban action.

The agency has said that foreign vessels operating without a valid licence in the Nigerian waters would be banned by December.

This was disclosed in a statement on Sunday.

The agency informed international oil shipping companies that, vessels operating on the Nigerian waters without a licence have three months to comply with the new regulation. This new law also applies to companies with expired licence.

Most vessels that transport crude oil in Nigerian waters are mostly foreign owned. The agency, responsible for regulations related to Nigerian shipping, maritime labor and coastal waters, is looking to raise revenue through shipping charges from registered companies.
