A specialist, Dr Idris Giwa, has urged the women to be careful, explaining that their inability to conceive might due to the presence of Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) in their system.

Giwa, who works with Sam Ethan Air Force Base Hospital Ikeja, disclosed that Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) is a condition of hormonal imbalance that is common among women.

He explained this during a medical health sensitisation programme organises by Estate Youth Parliament EYP, Ejigbo.

He explained that the hormonal imbalance is a cause of infertility in women and one of the commonest cause of menstrual irregularities in female adolescents and other women of reproductive age.

He noted that hormonal imbalance in women is a lifetime condition that could not be cured but managed.

“According to specialists, the exact cause of imbalance is unknown but it is an underlying factor that all women ought to take note of.

“Unlike in normal ovaries reproductive process where a single follicle is released, in PCOS, the ovaries produce many small follicles which are about 10 instead of a big one and as a result prevents ovulation,” he explained.

He further enlightened women to be wary whenever they experience irregular periods, miscarriage, sudden weight gain, hypertension or cardiovascular diseases and others.

He appealed to them to consistently engage in exercise, avoid smoking and avoid using birth control pills to normalize menstruation.

“As a lady, you have to be self conscious in such a way that you must notice any change in you on time. It is advisable that ladies seek medical attention when they experience reduction in the number of their period, inability to get pregnant, abnormal uterine bleeding, diabetes, sleep apnea, elevated cholesterol level and others.”
