President says farmers will benefit from govt policies

The President Muhammadu Buhari, has said that farmers will benefit from his administration’s reforms, as it would take steps to enhance output and productivity in the agricultural sector.

He stated that this would be achieved through ensuring the availability of cheap agricultural credits, farm inputs, fertiliser and the introduction of latest technologies.

The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Malam Garba Shehu in a statement on Friday, said Buhari stated this at a meeting with Katsina State Elders Forum in Abuja.

The President, who described agriculture as the country’s largest employer of labour and engine of growth, has promised to look into the request of the elders for the expansion of existing irrigation schemes at Zobe and Sabke dams. This is to enhance employment and profitability in agriculture.

He stated that his decision to choose practicing farmers as Minsters of Agriculture, first Chief Audu Ogbe, then Alhaji Sabo Nanono, reflects his desire to protect the interest of farmers and the attainment of national food self-sufficiency.

He further said he had directed the ministers to work with the states in rediscovering lost animal grazing routes and reserves. This will serve as a means to put and end to the frequent conflict between farmers and herders.
