By Modupe Shodeinde

The Cross River state government has called for the voluntary donation of blood to reduce the rate of sudden death in the state.

The Commissioner for Health, Dr Betta Edu, said the need for life saving blood became necessary due to an increase in deaths as a result of low blood bank in the state.

The Commissioner made this call when she took the awareness of the safe blood donation to the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital Community.

Explaining the reason for public awareness of blood donation, she stated that the government can not do it alone, hence the need to keep the public aware on the necessity of blood to save lives

The government noted that safe blood is essential for urgent life saving treatments and can help patients in critical conditions live longer.

A federal lawmaker, Sandy Onor, also stated that the National Assembly is considering passing a bill on free safe blood donation across the country.
