Supreme Court Reaffirms Yahaya Bello As Governor of Kogi State

By Emmanuel Awosika

The Supreme Court, in a ruling on Monday, confirmed Yahaya Bello as the rightful winner of the 2019 Governorship Election in Kogi State.

This comes after a Court of Appeal sitting in Abuja on July 4 upheld an earlier judgment of the Kaduna Governorship Election Petitions Tribunal dismissing a suit from the Peoples Democratic Party and its candidate, Musa Wada, challenging Bello’s win at the gubernatorial poll.

In its ruling, the seven-man panel led by Justice Mohammed Tanko said the appellants had failed to provide sufficient proof to warrant a cancellation of the election results.

“The appellants failed to prove before this court why it should disturb the concurrent findings of the two courts below”, Justice Okoro who read the ruling said.

“It is abundantly clear that this appeal is devoid of any scintilla of merit and it is accordingly dismissed.”

The PDP and its candidate had called for the annulment of the Kogi State election, insisting that Governor Yahaya Bello had rigged himself into office.

The petition with reference number EPT/KG/GOV/06/2019 prayed the Court to order the Independent National Electoral Commission to conduct fresh elections in the state.

However, the Supreme Court rejected the PDP’s suit, saying the party and had failed the allegations beyond reasonable doubt.
