Supreme court throws out suit challenging Bayelsa governor’s election

By Emmanuel Awosika

The Supreme Court has affirmed Duoye Diri as the rightful winner of the Bayelsa State Governorship Election in a ruling on Wednesday.

The seven-man panel, led by Justice Ngwuta, threw out the six suits calling for a reversal of the election results that led to Diri’s victory.

Alliance for Democracy (AD), Advanced Nigeria Democratic Party (ANDP), Accord Party (AP) and Labour Movement (LM), were among parties that filed the suits.

Diri, a candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), had originally placed second in the election held last year.

However, a Supreme Court judgment overturned the victory of David Lyon, a candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), who scored the highest number of votes.

This is not the first time opposition parties have called Diri’s election victory into question. The Bayelsa State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal has at different times dismissed suits challenging his victory.
