Tegbe Apologises Over Power Outages, Says Supply Will Be Restored Soon
The Minister of Power, Joseph Tegbe, has apologised to Nigerians over the recent decline in electricity supply, assuring that efforts are ongoing to restore normal service.
The disruptions have affected Lagos, Abuja, Ogun, Kwara and Oyo states, leaving households, businesses and public institutions struggling with reduced power supply.
In a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Adeola Adelabu, the minister said preliminary assessments showed that the outages were not caused by a major failure of the national grid.
The ministry attributed the disruptions to maintenance and operational challenges in parts of the power sector, alongside reduced electricity generation caused by gas supply constraints to thermal power plants and lower output from hydroelectric stations.
It said the decline in supply was being addressed by relevant operators.
Tegbe is working with the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), the Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) and electricity distribution companies to resolve the challenges and restore normal supply.
The minister has also engaged the operators to accelerate ongoing maintenance and provide updates to the public, according to the statement.
The ministry acknowledged the inconvenience caused by the outages, particularly in areas that had recently experienced improved electricity supply.
“We recognise what every hour without power means for individuals, families and businesses, and we do not take it lightly,” the statement said.
It added that further updates would be provided as restoration efforts progress.
The ministry also noted that NISO had earlier attributed the drop in electricity supply to inadequate gas supply to power generation plants.
