Uber exits Nigeria after 12 years

Global ride-hailing company, Uber, has announced the discontinuation of its operations in Nigeria, bringing its 12-year presence in the country to an end.

The company said its Nigerian operations would wind down effective Wednesday, September 2, 2026, following a review of its business priorities and investment focus across Africa.

Uber also announced its exit from Uganda, stressing that the decision was limited to the two countries and would not affect its operations in other African markets.

The company said it remains committed to sub-Saharan Africa and would focus its investments on markets where it believes it can create greater value for drivers and riders.

Uber said its immediate priority was to support drivers, riders and local employees affected by the decision throughout the transition.

The company also said it had begun communicating directly with affected employees, drivers and riders about arrangements following the shutdown.

Uber launched its services in Lagos in 2014 before expanding to Abuja in 2016.

The exit comes weeks after the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria directed airport managers to stop Uber and other e-hailing operators from conducting commercial operations at airports managed by the agency, pending licensing arrangements.

However, Uber said its decision to leave Nigeria was not related to the recent FAAN directive.

The company said its rider support service would remain available for a limited period after the shutdown to assist users with outstanding account and transition-related issues.
