UNIBEN lecturer to be prosecuted for ‘rape’

Modupe Shodeinde

A senior lecturer in the Department of English and Literature at the University of Benin (UNIBEN) Dr. Bode Ekundayo is to be prosecuted for allegedly raping a 400-Level student he was supervising.

It was gathered that the student had on October 5 gone to submit her final-year project at Ekundayo’s office where the incident reportedly happened.

It was said that, after the alleged rape, the suspect locked the student in his office, refusing to let her go until she contacted a friend who informed the school security.

The lecturer was arrested and the student rescued, it was learnt.

Dr. Ekundayo was said to have admitted committing the offence.

Prosecuting Ekundayo will be in line with Criminal Code of Nigeria, Sections 357 and 358, which in part penalises having carnal knowledge of a woman or girl without her consent, or with her consent if the consent is obtained by force or by means of threats or intimidation, or by fear of harm.

However, the institution’s spokesperson, Dr. Benedicta Ehanire did not respond to the reporter’s enquiries.
