UNILAG Leadership Crisis: Soyombo Resumes As Acting VC

By Emmanuel Awosika
Prof. Theophilus Omotunde Soyombo, the newly-appointed Vice Chancellor of the University of Lagos, announced today that he had resumed duties.
This announcement comes after various stakeholders including the University Senate have refused to acknowledge the removal of the former Vice Chancellor, Prof. Toyin Ogundipe, by the Governing council led by Dr. Wale Babalakin.
Soyombo, who spoke to journalists via telephone, said he had resumed duties because the Governing Council had ordered him to do so immediately in the letter of appointment addressed to him.
Soyombo did not reveal if he had resumed physically at the office of the Vice Chancellor in the University Senate Building. However, multiple outlets have suggested that newly appointed VC will likely be in Senate Building by Monday.
The University of Lagos has been thrown into a crisis of sorts following the sack of the former VC, Toyin Ogundipe for alleged financial misconduct and gross mismanagement.
Workers unions in the University including the ASUU, SSANU and NASU, have all thrown their weight behind Ogundipe, refusing to recognize the acting Vice-Chancellor.
Ogundipe himself has come out to debunk news of his removal from the position of Vice Chancellor. He stated that he was still the Vice Chancellor of the University of Lagos, advising the the public to disregard news of his sacking.
