Nigeria’s Super Falcons suffered a disappointing 3-2 defeat to tournament debutants Malawi in their opening Group C match of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) on Tuesday.

After a goalless first half, Malawi took the lead in the 78th minute before doubling their advantage moments later as Nigeria struggled defensively.

The Super Falcons fought back to reduce the deficit, but Malawi restored their two-goal cushion to make it 3-1.

Nigeria grabbed another goal deep into stoppage time, but it was not enough to prevent defeat.

The result marked a stunning start to Malawi’s first-ever WAFCON campaign and dealt a major setback to Nigeria’s bid for a record-extending 11th continental title.

The Super Falcons will now look to bounce back in their next Group C fixture as they continue their quest for a place in the knockout stage.
