We cannot afford to fail, Abiru says in aftermath of by-election victory

Winner of the Lagos East Senatorial by-election and member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Tokunbo Abiru, has said the party cannot afford to fail voters who supported the party.

Abiru said this in ‘Victory Speech’ following an announcement Independent National Electoral Commission declaring him the winner of the Saturday Lagos East Senatorial by-election.

Abiru, who contested against Babatunde Gbadamosi of the People’s Democratic Party, beat his opponent by a wide margin to secure the victory, polling 89,204 votes against Gbadamosi’s 11,251 votes.

He said: “Now is the time to translate all the promises we made into positive and tangible outcomes our people are expecting us to bring about. Now is the time to take our people from the realm of expectations to the limelight of fulfillment.”

He added that the election had disproved critics who believed the APC could no longer command the support of Lagosians.

He, however, noted that the party’s monumental win meant it must repose the trust people have placed in it.

“We cannot afford to fail those who voted for us; those who chose not to vote for us for whatever reasons and those who did not vote at all. We cannot afford to betray the invaluable trust our people reposed in us as a political party and as their representatives in government,” he stated in his speech.
