We’re silently working to free Igboho from detention —Yoruba

By Rasaq Adebayo

Yoruba Council of Elders (YCE) on Thursday said they were silently making efforts to have a self-acclaimed Yoruba freedom fighter, Sunday Adeyemo, popularly known as Sunday Igboho freed from detention.

The elders said that while they were not against the agitation by Igboho, they warned him to agitate within the ambit of law.

The Secretary General of the YCE, Dr. Kunle Olajide, stated this when he spoke with newsmen in Ibadan, Oyo State capital.

He bemoaned Nigeria’s current situation, saying that it does not give hope to youths, the reason according to him, many of them are getting frustrated.

“The younger generation cannot be patient, as we the older generation do. We are not opposed to their reaction, but we want them to moderate it,” he added.

The Department of State Security (DSS) on July 1 raided Igboho’s home in Ibadan. Two of his aides were reportedly killed during the raid and some of them arrested.

Apparently in the bid to escape being arrested by the Nigerian government, Igboho and his wife, Repo tried to catch a flight to Germany from Benin Republic but were arrested by the country’s security operatives at an airport in Cotonou.

Igboho has remained in custody in Benin since he was arrested on Monday, July 19.
