The Special Assistant to President Buhari on Digital and New Media, Tolu Ogunlesi has explained why a Major General was chosen to replace Lt. General Ibrahim Attahiru, the immediate past Army Chief.

President Buhari on Thursday, May 27, announced the appointment of Maj. Gen. Faruk Yahaya to replace the late Army Chief who died in a plane crash last Friday, May 21.

In response to the former Minister of Education, Oby Ezekwesili, who questioned the appointment of a Major General as the new Chief of Army Staff on her Twitter handle, the presidential aide said that was the only rank available for the position.

The former Minister said, ”Does this appointment of a Major General as Chief of Army Staff by @NGRPresident mean we shall lose some of the best of our Senior Officers of the @HQNigerianArmy ? I hope not.”

Responding to this, Ogunlesi said, “Only a Major General (2-Star General) could have been chosen, Ma. That’s the most senior rank available for the role. The only Lt-Gen (3-Star) in the Nigerian Army was the late COAS who sadly died in the plane crash. And the only 4-Star General is the Chief of Defence Staff.
