Why we can’t bomb bandits in forests – FG

By Joseph Ayinde

The Federal Government has said it would be difficult to bomb forests where bandits terrorizing parts of the country are camping.

The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed who stated this when featured on a Bond FM programme at the weekend said bombing the forest would be impossible due to innocent people living around the bandits.

Governor Nasir El-Rufai of Kaduna State recently called for the bombardment of forests where the bandits are camping as a means of putting an end to the incessant attacks in the state.

The governor said if the Federal Government fails to take necessary steps governors in the Northeast would have no choice but to hire mercenaries from other countries.

Reacting, the Minister stated that Nigerian security forces are far better than the mercenaries, saying the governor spoke out of deep concern.

He said, “Governor El-Rufai spoke out of a deep concern about the situation. He might have spoken out because of the circumstances in which the bandits are emboldened to operate.

“The mercenaries cannot be compared with our security forces; the fight against bandits is a difficult one because of the terrain.

“We cannot just go with full force to bomb them or else innocent people living around them will be killed and we don’t want that to happen”.
