 WTO: Okonjo-Iweala emerges as the first African DG

The former Minister of Finance, Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala has emerged as the first African to be elected as the Director General of the World Trade Organization.

The former minister who made it as one of the last two female standing in the selection process, polled 104 votes from 164 member countries to defeat her South Korea’s trade minister opponent, Yoo Mhung-hee.

This victory also makes her the first female Director General of the WTO in its 25 years history.
