2027: INEC seeks Oba Akiolu, Lagos traditional council’s support for peaceful polls

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has sought the support of the Oba of Lagos, Rilwan Akiolu, and the Lagos State Traditional Council for peaceful and credible elections in 2027.

INEC said traditional rulers have an important role to play in promoting peaceful participation and discouraging violence before, during and after the elections.

The commission made the appeal during a meeting with the Oba of Lagos and members of the Lagos State Traditional Council.

The engagement focused on the need for traditional institutions to encourage residents to participate in the electoral process and uphold peace during the 2027 general elections.

INEC also urged traditional rulers to use their influence within their communities to discourage vote-buying, intimidation, violence and other practices capable of undermining the electoral process.

The commission said collaboration with traditional institutions was important to creating an environment where voters could freely exercise their rights.

Oba Akiolu and other traditional rulers were expected to support efforts aimed at ensuring peaceful conduct during the election period.

The engagement forms part of INEC’s preparations for the 2027 general elections and its consultations with stakeholders across the country.
