Katsina: UNICEF demands release of abducted students

By Emmanuel Awosika

The United Nations International Children Emergency Fund (UNICEF) has joined others to demand for the release of students abducted by gunmen from Government Science Secondary School, Kankara in Katsina State.

The organisation made the call in a statement released by its Regional Director for West and Central Africa, Marie-Pierre Poirier on Monday.

The statement reads in part: “UNICEF condemns in the strongest possible terms this brutal attack and calls for the immediate release of all children and their return to their families.

“UNICEF is deeply concerned about this act of violence. Attacks on schools are a violation of children’s rights.

“Children should feel safe at home, in schools and in their playgrounds at all times.

“We stand with the families of the missing children and the community affected by this horrifying event.”

According to reports, the gunmen had abducted the students from their hostels on Friday night.

Authorities say some students have been found, but the larger majority of victims are still in captivity.
