2026: Full list of Nigeria’s 5 highest-ranked universities

The latest July 2026 Webometrics Ranking of World Universities has placed the University of Ibadan (UI) at the top of the Nigerian university ranking, with four other institutions completing the country’s top five.

The ranking assessed 32,148 universities and higher education institutions worldwide, with emphasis on digital visibility, openness and research excellence.

Here are the five highest-ranked Nigerian universities in the latest 2026 ranking:

1. University of Ibadan (UI)

The University of Ibadan emerged as Nigeria’s highest-ranked university in the July 2026 Webometrics ranking.

UI placed 1,291st globally, making it the leading Nigerian institution among those assessed.

The ranking highlighted the importance of digital visibility, accessibility of academic resources and research impact in determining institutional positions.

2. University of Lagos (UNILAG)

The University of Lagos came second in Nigeria, ranking 1,355th globally.

UNILAG’s position places it among Nigeria’s strongest institutions in terms of online visibility, openness and research excellence.

3. University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN)

The University of Nigeria, Nsukka secured third place nationally, ranking 1,397th in the world.

The institution’s position puts it ahead of several other prominent Nigerian universities in the latest Webometrics assessment.

4. Covenant University

Covenant University, Ota, emerged as the fourth-ranked university in Nigeria.

The private university occupied the 1,522nd position globally, making it the highest-ranked private institution among Nigeria’s top five in the latest list.

5. Landmark University

Landmark University completed Nigeria’s top five, ranking fifth nationally and 1,659th globally.

The university’s position means that two private universities — Covenant University and Landmark University — featured among the country’s five highest-ranked institutions.

The Webometrics ranking is published twice a year and places considerable emphasis on universities’ digital footprint, research visibility and accessibility of scholarly resources, rather than relying solely on traditional academic reputation measures.

The latest July 2026 Webometrics ranking highlights the continued strength and growing visibility of Nigeria’s leading universities on the global academic stage. The University of Ibadan, University of Lagos, University of Nigeria, Nsukka, Covenant University and Landmark University emerged as the five highest-ranked Nigerian institutions in the assessment, with UI taking the lead nationally.
