Sowore Seeks International Sanctions Against Ekiti Governor, Ikogosi Marathon Organisers
The presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), Omoyele Sowore, has called for international action against Ekiti State Governor, Biodun Oyebanji, and organisers of the Ikogosi Marathon following an attack on him and members of his team in Ado-Ekiti.
Sowore made the demand amid controversy surrounding the incident, which occurred at a restaurant in the Ekiti State capital.
The activist had accused armed men allegedly backed by the state government of attacking him and his associates shortly after he completed an interview with a radio station in the state.
He also alleged that the Department of State Services (DSS) provided the attackers with his team’s location to facilitate the assault.
However, the Ekiti State Police Command gave a different account, saying its operatives rescued Sowore following an altercation involving some individuals at the restaurant.
The police said Sowore sustained an injury during the incident and was taken to a hospital for treatment. The command also announced that an investigation had been ordered to establish what happened and identify those responsible.
Sowore rejected the police description of the incident, insisting that he and his associates were attacked rather than involved in an altercation.
The AAC candidate’s demand for international sanctions comes as the controversy over the incident continues, with questions being raised about the safety of political actors and the need to hold those responsible for political violence accountable.
