Security agencies have rescued 20 prospective National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members and a civilian abducted in Imo State.

The victims were rescued during a joint operation involving the military, Department of State Services (DSS) and the Nigeria Police Force.

The corps members were abducted by gunmen along the Owerri-Onitsha Road in the Umunoha area of Mbaitoli Local Government Area of the state.

The victims were reportedly travelling from Ibadan, Oyo State, to different NYSC orientation camps when they were attacked.

Security agencies subsequently launched a search operation to locate the abducted persons and apprehend their captors.

The rescue followed several days of efforts by security operatives, who had been tracking the suspected kidnappers and their hideout.

The development comes after conflicting reports over the number of victims still in captivity following the attack.

Police authorities had earlier said some victims were rescued, while efforts continued to locate others.

The security agencies have continued operations in the area as part of efforts to apprehend those responsible for the abduction.

The rescued victims are expected to receive necessary assistance following their ordeal.
