Two more professors of the University of Lagos (UNILAG), including a law lecturer, who is also the incumbent attorney-general of Oyo State, Oyelowo Oyewo, and a professor of African History, Rufus Akinyele, have tested positive for Covid-19.

Workers and residents of the university now live in fear of interacting with possible carriers of the virus around the campus

PREMIUM TIMES reported that the news was confirmed by a top management official at the university, who chose to be anonymous due to the confidentiality of the matter.

It was gathered that Akinyele has been discharged from an isolation centre at the infectious disease hospital (IDH), Yaba, Lagos, and recuperating at his official quarters on the campus, Mr Oyewo is on self-isolation at an undisclosed location.

This came at the heels of the University losing two of its prominent professors, a former vice chancellor, Oye Ibidapo-Obe and former dean of the faculty of education, Duro Ajeyalemi in a quick succession within days to COVID-19.

It was also gathered that, Ajeyalemi had reported at the university’s medical centre before he was taken to the teaching hospital at Idi-Araba.

The university’s vice-chancellor, Oluwatoyin Ogundipe, when contacted by PREMIUM TIMES confirmed that the university in partnership with relevant authorities has commenced the tracing of some contacts following Ajeyalemi’s death on Wednesday.

“We are making efforts to ensure that those to be tested for the disease are able to get tested on time. There is no need for panic, the situation is well under control but we advise everyone to follow the Covid-19 guidelines and protocols adequately,” he said.
