EFCC to continue probe into NFF funds despite Gusau’s resignation

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has said its investigation into the utilisation of the Federal Government’s N12 billion intervention fund released to the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) will continue despite the resignation of Ibrahim Gusau and other federation officials.

EFCC spokesperson, Dele Oyewale, confirmed that the investigation was ongoing when contacted on Thursday.

The probe centres on the use of the intervention fund approved by the Federal Government to settle outstanding wages and bonuses owed to players and officials of Nigeria’s national teams.

The development comes a day after Gusau resigned as NFF president, alongside General Secretary Mohammed Sanusi and several members of the federation’s Executive Committee.

Gusau announced his resignation on Thursday amid mounting pressure over the performance of Nigeria’s national teams.

The Super Eagles failed to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, while the Super Falcons also missed out on the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup after losing their qualification playoff to South Africa.

The EFCC investigation had already commenced before the leadership changes at the NFF. Some officials linked to the intervention fund have reportedly been invited by investigators to provide statements.

Oyewale, however, did not disclose the identities of those questioned or whether any arrests had been made.

The ongoing investigation is expected to examine how the N12 billion intervention fund was utilised and whether it was spent for the purposes for which it was approved.

The leadership changes at the NFF have also created uncertainty ahead of the federation’s scheduled elective congress on September 27.
