Egunjobi, Yusuf reject APC expulsion, say they resigned in July

Former Agege Local Government Chairman, Ganiyu Egunjobi, and former Lagos State House of Assembly aspirant, Azeez Yusuf, have rejected their expulsion from the All Progressives Congress, saying they resigned from the party in July.

The duo were expelled by the Lagos State chapter of the APC on Wednesday over alleged anti-party activities and disloyalty.

The party had accused the two politicians of leaving the APC after failing to secure its tickets for the Agege Constituencies I and II seats and subsequently obtaining nominations from the Allied Peoples Movement.

However, Egunjobi and Yusuf, in a statement, said their resignation from the APC took place weeks before the party announced their expulsion.

“For the avoidance of doubt, we resigned from the APC in July 2026 — weeks before the party announced our purported expulsion on September 23,” they said.

They said they had communicated their decision to the party before joining the APM and that their resignation and defection had been publicly reported.

The two politicians also questioned the basis for expelling them after they had already left the party.

“How can a party expel people who had already resigned from its membership?” they asked.

Egunjobi and Yusuf said their decision to leave the APC followed unresolved grievances over the party’s primary elections for the two constituencies.

They claimed they had submitted petitions and made representations to address the issues but said their concerns were not satisfactorily resolved.

According to them, they subsequently decided to pursue their political ambitions under the APM platform.

The duo also rejected the suggestion that their defection meant they had abandoned their political allies.

They said they remained committed to President Bola Tinubu, Lagos State Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat, Senator Idiat Adebule and Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudasiru Obasa.

The APC, however, maintained that the conduct of the two former members amounted to anti-party activity and disloyalty, saying members who lose internal contests are expected to accept the outcome or seek available avenues of redress.

The party also described their claim of having resigned earlier as a belated attempt to avoid disciplinary action.
