Entrepreneur Elumelu earns Belgium’s highest honour

By Emmanuel Awosika

Belgium has conferred the honorary distinction of Officer in the Order of Leopold, on renowned entrepreneur and philanthropist, Tony Elumelu.

Belgium conferred the honour, which is the country’s oldest and most important national honour, on Elumelu for his poverty eradication and youth empowerment efforts.

Elumelu was presented with the honour by the Belgian Ambassador to Nigeria, H.E. Ambassador Daniel Bertrand, in a ceremony at the Belgian House in Abuja on Sunday (Nov. 15), which marked the Belgian King’s Day, an important national holiday in Belgium.

Elumelu, through his Tony Elumelu Foundation (TEF), has created gainful employment for millions of Africans around the continent.

The TEF plans to raise $100m over a 10-year period to finance businesses set up by 10,000 young African entrepreneurs across 54 African countries.

Currently, around 9,600 African entrepreneurs have benefited from the TEF scheme. And the group continues to increase its outreach to more young Africans.

This is based on Elumelu’s belief that entrepreneurship can solve problems bedeviling the continent including poverty, hunger and mass migration.
