Falana urges religious bodies to defend Nigeria’s democracy ahead of 2027
Human rights lawyer, Femi Falana, SAN, has urged religious organisations in Nigeria to take an active role in protecting the country’s democracy ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Falana made the call while speaking on the political situation in the country, urging religious leaders and institutions not to remain neutral when democratic values and citizens’ rights are at stake.
He said religious bodies had a responsibility to speak out against actions that could undermine democracy, constitutional governance and the rule of law.
The senior lawyer warned that remaining on the sidelines could allow practices capable of weakening democratic institutions to persist unchecked.
Falana also urged Nigerians to participate actively in the political process and hold elected officials accountable for their actions.
He stressed the importance of protecting the electoral process and ensuring that citizens are able to freely exercise their rights without intimidation or manipulation.
According to him, religious institutions have significant influence in society and should use their platforms to promote justice, accountability and respect for democratic principles.
He therefore called on them to engage their members and the wider public ahead of the 2027 elections rather than remaining passive observers.
Falana’s call comes as political parties and politicians intensify preparations for the 2027 general elections.
