The Federal Government has shut down six pharmaceutical manufacturing companies not complying with Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) of the National Agency for Food, Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC).

NAGFDAC Director-General, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, in a statement issued on Monday said the closure was in line with the agency’s policy of its policy of zero tolerance for the circulation of substandard and falsified medicines in the country.

The DG said the companies were shut down after a nationwide surveillance of their manufacturing activities was carried out.

“These local manufacturers, in spite of appropriate notification failed to meet minimum Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) standards in line with extant requirements to assure the quality, safety and efficacy of Pharmaceutical products.”

She added that criminal non-regulatory activities by some drug manufacturers were also discovered during the surveillance exercise.

Stating that all companies that had been shut down would remain closed till they meet the full requirements, she added that this should serve as a deterrent for all other companies that failed to meet the GMP requirements.
