FG Considers Full Reopening Of Schools

By Emmanuel Awosika

The Federal Government has begun considering fully reopening academic institutions in the country, after the COVID-19 pandemic forced their closure for months.

Minister of State for Education, Mr Chukwuemeka Nwajiuba, made this known while addressing newsmen during a briefing of the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19 in Abuja.

Nwajiuba indicated there is no fixed date for reopening schools, but asked students to exercise patience with the Federal Government, as efforts were underway to ensure schools reopen soon.

According to him, the FG has held talks with several players in the tertiary education sector with a view to guaging their readiness for reopening.

He said some of these tertiary institutions, particularly the privately owned universities, have declared their readiness to resume, while the response from public universities was mixed.

The Minister said the Presidential Task Force would evaluate various reports from the universities before making any announcement on the reopening.

He said, “I urge our students who have actually exercised a lot of patience along with their parents…I urge you to bear with us a little bit more. The rioting needs to stop; there is nothing to riot about.”

He added that the government would not attempt to “bandy around dates”, adding that they remained “positive” that a new date for resumption would be announced soon.
