FRSC warns Nigerians against night travels

By Modupe Shodeinde

Corps Marshall of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Boboye Odeyemi, has warned Nigerians about the dangers of night travels.

In a statement issued by the FRSC spokesperson, Bisi Kazeem, Oyeyemi warned commercial drivers, private vehicle owners and fleet operators on the dangers and fatalities of travelling at night.

He expressed worry on the rising cases of crashes and fatalities recorded at night.

He said night trips are made dangerous by poor visibility, fatigue, sleeping on the wheel and excessive speeding.

Oyeyemi narrated a crash that occurred on the 5th of Janauary because one of the drivers slept off at the wheel due to fatigue.

He said “The crash involved the driver of a white Toyota Hiace bus ( MSA 942 XA) that contravened COVID-19 protocols on physical distancing by overloading the bus with 18 passengers instead of the prescribed 8 passengers, and a green Iveco trailer ( AKA 788 XC) carrying 07 passengers.

“Out of the 25 passengers on board the two vehicles, 08 were killed while 17 sustained various injuries.”

He also recalled another accident on January 9 involving a Sienna (KUG 538 BJ) and a Sharon bus without a number plate on the Akwanga-Keffi road in Nasarawa State in which all 17 passengers were “burnt beyond recognition.”

According to Oyeyemi, most vehicle owners travel at night to avoid arrest for overloading vehicles and neglecting social distancing.
