Guard against factors causing recurrent miscarriage – Farayola tells women

A Senior Medical Officer at the Lagos State Maternal and Child Center, Amuwo Odofin, Dr. Wale Farayola has said that exaggerated care, using drugs on self-prescription as well as infection are some of the factors causing recurrent miscarriage among some women.

The medical expert explained that about 12 to 20 per cent of pregnancies end in spontaneous miscarriages.

According to him, approximately 50 per cent of miscarriages occurring early in the first three months of pregnancy is associated with chromosomal abnormality warning women to be more cautious during pregnancy.

He explained that having a recurrent miscarriage would not only cause damage to the body system but can also affect the patient psychologically and lead to certain mental abnormalities in women.

He said: “A spontaneous abortion is a consecutive loss of 3 or more foetuses due to chromosomal abnormality, cervical incompetence, antiphospholipid syndrome, uterine anomaly and many more.

“A woman can also experience septic abortion associated with clinical evidence of infection of the uterus or womb while others would have consumed cytotoxic drugs that can damage their wombs.

“In any case of threatened, incomplete or inevitable miscarriage depending on whichever one a patient experience, a proper pelvic ultrasound scan should be carried out on the patient and prescribed drugs should be carefully consumed. It is pathetic that many women’s thinking is to cover up the shame of abortion without giving themselves the opportunity to be treated in a more advanced method despite our present level of exposure,” he said.

He, therefore, encouraged women to do a comprehensive medical checkup before attempting pregnancy as they might have been infected earlier.
