Lagos State Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat has urged Nigerians to preserve the Yoruba language and culture, describing them as important parts of the people’s identity, history and values.

Hamzat made the call following his appearance on Masoyinbo, a Yoruba-language game show that promotes indigenous language and cultural heritage through quizzes and challenges.

In a post on his X account on Friday, Hamzat said preserving indigenous languages was a shared responsibility and urged Nigerians to pass their cultural heritage to future generations.

“Yoruba is more than a language. It is part of our identity, history, values and what connects us as a community,” he said.

He added that Nigeria’s cultural diversity was one of its greatest strengths and stressed the need to protect indigenous languages.

“Building a greater Lagos means investing not only in infrastructure and public services but also in our people, culture and values. We must work together to keep our heritage alive for generations to come,” Hamzat stated.

The deputy governor also commended the programme for promoting Yoruba language and culture through entertainment.

Hamzat appeared on the 364th episode of the programme, hosted by Lekan Fabilola, where he answered 10 questions.

However, penalties for switching between Yoruba and English reportedly reduced his prize to ₦20,000.

The programme has featured several prominent Nigerians, including Fuji musician Saheed Osupa, activist Omoyele Sowore, actresses Funke Akindele and Femi Adebayo, rapper Falz, comedian Ali Baba and actor Lateef Adedimeji.

The show seeks to encourage the use of Yoruba and preserve the language through engaging quizzes and cultural discussions.
