Italy close to appointing Andrea Pirlo as new national team coach

Italy are on the verge of appointing Andrea Pirlo as the new head coach of the national team following the departure of Gennaro Gattuso.

The 2006 FIFA World Cup winner has emerged as the leading candidate for the role after several high-profile options were ruled out during the Italian Football Federation’s search for a new manager.

Pirlo, who is currently managing Dubai-based United FC, is expected to sign a four-year contract and take charge of the Azzurri ahead of their upcoming UEFA Nations League fixtures.

The 47-year-old previously coached Juventus, guiding the club to Coppa Italia and Supercoppa Italiana titles during the 2020/21 season, before later taking charge of Turkish side Fatih Karagümrük, Sampdoria and United FC.

His expected appointment comes as Italy seek to rebuild after another disappointing World Cup campaign, with the federation hoping the former midfield maestro can restore the team’s fortunes.
