Juventus Sack Coach After Champions League Ouster

By Emmanuel Awosika

Juventus have fired head coach Maurizio Sarri following their Champions League Round of 16 defeat at the hands of French Ligue 1 side, Lyon.

An early penalty scored by club captain Memphis Depay allowed Lyon progress at Juve’s expense. The result marked the first time since 2016 that Juventus had crashed out of the Champions League at the Round of 16 stage.

Although Sarri signed a three-year contract at the start of his tenure last year, the Bianconeri decided to part with the Italian who led them to a ninth consecutive Serie A title.

In a statement released today, the club said, “The club would like to thank the coach for having written a new page in Juventus’ history with the victory of the ninth consecutive championship, the culmination of a personal journey that led him to climb all the divisions of Italian football.”

The sack comes after Sarri had told reporters that the match against Lyon would not affect his future.

Sarri, who took over from Massimiliano Allegri in June 2019, received plenty of criticism for his team’s performances during the season. The Bianconeri lost both the Italian Cup and Italian Super Cup finals, and won only two of their final league games.

Such poor performances have led critics to say Sarri’s sack was long coming. Possible replacements suggested for the Italian include former Tottenham boss, Mauricio Pochettino; Lazio gaffer, Simone Inzaghi; and Real Madrid boss, Zinedine Zidane.
