Kaduna State shuts down schools as COVID-19 cases increase

By Emmanuel Awosika

The government of Kaduna State has closed down all schools across the state as COVID-19 cases continue to rise, sparking fears of a second wave.

Announcing the decision, Commissioner for Education, Dr. Shehu Makarfi, said the state had no choice but to shut schools due to the recent upsurge in COVID-19 infections.

He said the closure order will become effective as from December 16, 2020 (Wednesday).

Makarfi said new numbers of COVID-19 infections recorded were similar to those seen during the first wave of the pandemic in April, May and June, hinting that a new wave of infections was underway.

He observed that the State Ministry of Health has confirmed that the infections are predominantly among individuals aged between 10 and 35 years, which are the majority in the educational sector.
