The Lagos State Government has sealed more than 12 buildings across the state for failing to comply with mandatory elevator safety regulations.

The enforcement, carried out by the Lagos State Safety Commission, affected a mix of hotels, shopping complexes and residential apartments located in areas such as Lekki Phase 1 and Ikeja.

Officials said the affected property owners and managers ignored repeated directives to register their lift systems for inspection, certification and routine maintenance.

The registration process is required to ensure proper monitoring and prevent accidents linked to faulty elevators.

Leading the operation, the Commission’s Chief Scientific Officer, Sovi Tijani, who represented the Director-General, Lanre Mojola, explained that the clampdown followed persistent non-compliance despite several notices issued to the buildings.

He noted that some operators failed to acknowledge official communications, while others allegedly obstructed enforcement officials during the exercise.

Authorities stressed that registering elevators is critical for regular safety checks and protecting users in both public and private facilities. They warned that poorly maintained or uncertified lifts pose serious risks to lives and property.

The state government reiterated its commitment to enforcing safety standards, adding that affected buildings will remain sealed until they meet all regulatory requirements.

Building owners and facility managers were urged to comply with existing safety laws by registering their elevators and ensuring regular maintenance, or risk further sanctions.
