Lagos House of Assembly renews calls for state police

By Emmanuel Awosika

The Lagos State House of Assembly has renewed calls for a state policing mechanism in wake on the violence that engulfed the state last week.

The Speaker, Mudashiru Obasa, stated this during a special sitting to evaluate the damage done to both private and public properties while the looting and vandalism raged.

He asked the government to empower the Neighbourhood Safety Corps to adequately police communities in Lagos.

“I think if there is any time for our agitation for state police to be given utmost attention, it is now,” he stated.

Obasa recounted how that the once-peaceful #EndSARS protests was hijacked by criminal elements “who don’t mean well for the populace.”

He cautioned Lagos state residents against destroying properties, saying looting would only cause more hardship.

He also commiserated with those who had lost relatives in the carnage and sympathised with the judiciary and security forces who were affected by the vandalism.

“I will like to bring it to our notice that a committee has been set up that will review cases of those who lost their belongings and goods to support them by the government. I assure you all that this Assembly will join with the Executive in working out compensation modality for all victims,” he said.
