The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has arrested a resident for allegedly dumping refuse into a drainage channel during rainfall in the state.

The arrest was made by LAWMA officials during an enforcement operation aimed at curbing indiscriminate waste disposal and preventing the blockage of drainage channels.

The agency said the resident was caught disposing of waste into the drainage system despite warnings against the practice.

LAWMA said dumping refuse into drains can obstruct the free flow of stormwater and contribute to flooding, particularly during periods of heavy rainfall.

The authority warned residents against using roads, drains and other unauthorised locations as refuse disposal points.

It urged residents to properly bag and store their waste and hand it over to authorised waste collectors rather than disposing of it in drainage channels.

LAWMA also said enforcement teams would continue to monitor areas prone to indiscriminate dumping and take action against environmental offenders.

The agency appealed to residents to report cases of illegal dumping and other waste management violations to the appropriate authorities.
