Lekki shootings: Tell Nigerians who ordered attack, Niyi Osundare urges Buhari

By Emmanuel Awosika

Renowned poet and playwright, Niyi Osundare, has urged President Muhammadu Buhari to reveal who ordered soldiers to shoot at unarmed #EndSARS protesters at the Lekki Toll Gate on Tuesday.

For weeks, #EndSARS protesters have been on the streets calling for government to stamp out police brutality and extortion targeted at citizens.

However, some of the protesters gathered at the Tollgate were reportedly shot at by men of the armed forces, promoting widespread condemnation.

Many expected the President to address the killings during his speech on Thursday night, but the nation’s No. 1 citizen failed to offer even a comment on the attacks.

Osundare said Nigerians had taken the President’s silence on the killings as a sign of contempt while others saw it as a lack of concern.

He said this in a statement titled ‘President Buhari, Say Something.’

He said: “You have an urgent, even existential reason to prove them wrong. Tell us: who ordered the Lekki Massacre? Who oversaw its execution? What sanctions are you putting in place for those perpetrators? The Nigerian people are waiting to know. The whole wide world is waiting.”
